SUBSTANTIVE COVERAGE AND OBJECTIVES OF COURSE:

This seminar gives the student an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of selected issues in environmental law. Coverage will include regulation of private industry, self-reporting requirements of major environmental laws, regulatory devices used to protect vulnerable resources such as endangered species and wetlands, and the use of the process of negotiation in promulgating regulations, determining penalties, and making siting decisions. Students research and write a paper on a selected environmental law issue and produce other written work during the course.

Focused research and writing in the environmental area would benefit students who plan to engage in a general practice, a practice focused in the real estate area, or practice representing public interest groups or the regulated industries and lenders who appear before state and federal agencies. Additionally, the course would benefit students who hope to work for the federal or state agencies that administer environmental laws such as EPA, the Army Corps of Engineers, the Soil Conservation Service, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation.
