The Black Law Students Association

The University of Memphis Chapter of The Black Law Students Association was founded in the Fall of 1966 when the first African-American was admitted to the Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law.

The purpose of this association is to utilize the collective resources of the members to:

  • Articulate and promote the professional needs and goals of African-American law students
  • Foster and encourage professional competence
  • Focus upon the relationship of the African-American attorney to the American legal structure
  • Instill in the African-American attorney and law student a greater awareness of commitment to the needs of the African-American community
  • Influence the legal community to bring about meaningful change to meet the needs of the African-American community
  • Do all things necessary and lawful to accomplish these purposes

The BLSA has strived to reach out to the community by:

  • Sponsoring panel discussions with area attorneys/judges
  • Involvement with MIFA
  • Establishment of a scholarship for a high school senior
  • Annual BBQ 
  • Children's Halloween party
  • Tutoring

The National BLSA conducts its prestigious Frederick Douglass Moot Court Competition in which University of Memphis has received awards in recent years. The NBLSA also awards scholarships.
