Housing Options

The University of Memphis is located in the heart of Memphis, surrounded by stately homes with elegantly landscaped grounds.  Museums, art galleries, malls, fine restaurants, a large public park with a lake, and two 18-hole golf courses are within a mile of the campus.  Memphis is an entertainment mecca, known as the "birthplace of the blues" and for historic Beale Street and Graceland.  With a population of more than one million, the city is the cultural, economic, and medical center of the Mid-South.  Memphis is home to a number of international businesses, major law firms, federal and state courts, and governmental agencies.  Law students gain valuable access to this thriving professional legal community through externships and summer clerkships.

On-Campus Housing Options...

On-campus housing is available for single students at the Carpenter Complex. The Carpenter Complex is located just down the street from the law school and has apartment or townhouse style accommodations. The contract for the Carpenter Complex is an extended contract, so students can have access to their unit during times when classes are not in session. Married student housing is available for full-time students who are married and living with their spouse, and single students who are the head of households and living with dependent children. Off-Campus Housing Options...

Memphis, like other large cities, is divided into several sections.  Some of the suburban areas are also incorporated making them "separate" cities within the metropolitan area of Memphis.

The University of Memphis is located in East Memphis, just east of the Midtown area.  East Memphis is a popular area of town with quaint older homes for purchase, and some for rent.  This location is convenient to all parts of the city.  Midtown, the cultural center of the city, is characterized by tree-lined streets and beautifully remodeled historic homes.  Downtown is a busy corporate area with many restaurants, night spots, office buildings, and high rise apartments.

The majority of law students at The University of Memphis Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law live in Downtown, Midtown, East Memphis, or the suburban areas east of the city.  Many students often choose the more suburban areas that are very convenient for shopping, dining, and theaters.  Cordova is one of the newer areas of town surrounding a large mall and many other amenities.  Germantown and Bartlett are two of the incorporated areas with very good school systems and a strong sense of community.

Although the University of Memphis School of Law does not endorse any of the properties or apartment complexes within the city or its suburban areas, we have surveyed our law students and compiled a list of on- and off-campus housing options.  This list is not meant to be comprehensive but should serve as a place to begin your housing search, click here.

The University of Memphis also has off-campus housing information available on the University website.  For more information click here
