Accreditations

The University of Memphis is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) (1866 Southern Lane, Decatur, GA 30030-4097, telephone number 404-679-4501) to award bachelor's, first professional, master's, educational specialist's, and doctoral degrees. Individual colleges, schools, and departments are accredited by the appropriate agencies.

In 1965, shortly after its formation, the law school was accredited by the American Bar Association, the official accrediting agency for American law schools.  The law school has maintained its accreditation. Law schools approved by the American Bar Association (ABA) provide a legal education which meets a minimum set of standards as promulgated by the ABA. Every jurisdiction in the United States has determined that graduates of ABA-approved law schools are able to sit for the bar in their respective jurisdictions.

The law school is also accredited by the Association of American Law Schools.  The AALS is a non-profit association of 166 law schools.  The purpose of the association is “the improvement of the legal profession through legal education.”  It serves as the learned society for law teachers and is legal education’s principal representative to the federal government and to other national higher education organizations and learned societies.
